Your Boat Building Career
Post-Graduate
Placement at the Apprenticeshop
Most
yards that work on wooden boats make a profit through repairs
and restorations. There is high demand in the trade for builders
who have experience in this area. To prepare our graduates for
restoration work, any graduate apprentice is welcome to apply for the
Journeyman position, a year-long program in wooden boat maintenance
and restoration. The Journeyman takes on traditional wooden
boat projects ranging from the restoration of 100 year old tenders,
to 40' lobsterboats and yachts. These projects may include replanking,
reframing, redecking, rebuilding a cabin, installing interior
cabinetry and completing systems work. Most journeyman projects
will be on a commission basis, so there will also be the opportunity
to work directly with clients to figure out creative solutions
in design and repair work.
Though
the Journeyman program focuses on the continued education of
the participants, there is a component of instruction responsibility
as well. As the most experienced apprentice in the shop, the
Journeyman is available to answer questions for apprentices,
interns, and other course participants, and confident in showing
others how to approach a problem, teaching boatbuilding skills,
and demonstrate an exemplary level of craftsmanship, commitment and professionalism.
Other
Post Graduate Placement
Graduates of our Apprenticeshop have continued their work as boatbuilders in their own
shops and as craftspeople and educators
for highly respected companies and organizations. Our graduates have worked as educators
and researchers for traditional boat projects in the Azores, Sardinia and Russia. Our graduates have also worked on historic
projects such as Sultana and Amistad.
The Apprenticeshop
offers networking opportunities with local, domestic, and international
boat yards, museums, and other programs. Graduate apprentices
are encouraged to take advantage of the alumni community
to find work after successfully completing their shop program and to begin their careers in traditional
boat building.
